Skill Building

Education

is an option for youth who wish to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence to obtain and retain a living wage job. Often, our students equate education with failure and humiliation and need someone to show them the power education can have in their lives. Our teachers understand these challenges and work with students to nurture their interests and develop their skills and confidence.

The ultimate goal of the school is to engage youth in any way possible. We employ a positive approach, which encourages youth to learn in whatever way is best suited to their needs, be it peer-based learning or one-on-one tutorials.

Education Fast Fact: The education center has helped more than 200 youth earn their GED and more than 125 go to college.

PAVE

(Promoting Avenues to Employment) is our career-training program that prepares homeless and at-risk youth for employment through internships, job readiness training and employment opportunities. Our curriculum is designed in partnership with private sector employers, so our youth can develop the skills to meet the needs of local businesses. We provide training in tourism and hospitality careers, and business occupations. We also prepare our youth with job readiness skills, which include resume writing, interviewing, time management, appropriate dress and communication skills.

PAVE Fast Fact: PAVE has worked with more than 300 youth since its inception in 2003.

PAVE Fast Fact: In summer 2005, New Avenues received top performance honors for job training placement outcomes among 14 job-training providers.

The Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShop

provides homeless youth a real world experience and an opportunity to build skills through job training. Youth go through six weeks of customer service and hospitality training through our PAVE program, and if ready, they move to an in-house training at the Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShop located at 524 SW Yamhill. Once their training is complete the PartnerShop can hire them, where they begin developing tangible work experience while building their resume. Many youth employed at the PartnerShop are earning their first paycheck, which is an extraordinarily positive, life-changing experience.

PartnerShop Fast Fact:82% of youth participating in the PartnerShop training program are currently employed, pursuing post-secondary education or focusing on completing their GED or HS Diploma.
