What do you do with a construction site whose progress has been halted until 2013? In these days of economic difficulty, TMT Development President Vanessa Sturgeon faced a dilemma that was all too common. But the innovative solution that she and New Avenues for Youth decided on was a bit more unheard of. A conference room in New Avenues’ downtown facility was transformed into an art space, internationally famed and local artists were brought in, and thirty homeless and at-risk youth signed up to paint a gigantic mural that would soon surround the construction site. The results were amazing. Through New Avenues' PAVE job training program and Artist Mentorship Program, youth were able to be paid a living wage for their contributions. And some of them-like Cory above-stepped up to take on management roles in the project. See the final installation for yourself! It’s in the downtown core at SW Park and Yamhill until 2013. |
