New Avenues for Youth Alternative School
Another proud New Avenues graduate!
The New Avenues for Youth Alternative School for Homeless Youth is a fully accredited high school designed for homeless students who have experienced barriers to educational opportunities. Our dedicated educators and volunteer tutors help prepare students for the GED, re-enter high school, or obtain the necessary credits to receive a diploma. Additionally, the school provides tutoring, computer training, college preparation and placement, and financial aid assistance.
Staff in our education program also partner with organizations throughout the Portland community to bring eye-opening experiences to youth outside of the classroom. In 2013 alone, youth in our education program have had the opportunity to explore the world through the lens of a camera with Focus on Youth, climb on a mountain for the first time at Timberline Lodge, row the Willamette with the Rose City Rowers, give back to their community by volunteering with Meals on Wheels, write a play and have it performed by professional actors through PlayWrite, explore creative writing with WriteAround Portland, participate in a multi-day therapeutic wilderness program with LEAP, and so much more.
